Rathmullan
village is located on the western shores of Lough Swilly and has
one of the finest beaches in the county. The surrounding
countryside is a mixture of broadleaf woodland and farm land
with Croghan Hill forming a dramatic backdrop. The village
looks across the Lough towards the village of Fahan and
Inishowen's largest town, Buncrana. Letterkenny, County
Donegal's largest town, is located 15 miles to the south. It was
from Rathmullan that the last great chieftains left Ireland in
the year 1607 - an event commemorated in The Flight of the
Earl's Centre in the centre of the village. |

The 2
km long sandy beach at Rathmullan is popular with
tourists and locals alike. Unusually, for a Donegal beach, it is
lined with broadleaf trees for a 1km stretch and this
contributes to it's unique character. The main
beach has lifeguards on duty during the busy summer season but
there are also quieter areas for those who just want to relax
and sunbathe. The beach, because of its length, is also very
popular with local walkers, who can enjoy the marvellous
open space and superb views over the Inishowen peninsula. |

The
photo, right, shows a section of the small marina
attached to Rathmullan's pier. During the summer season the
marina comes to life with local yachts mingling with smaller
craft and local fishing boats. Here you can charter the fully
equipped Enterprise 1 for pleasure or fishing
trips. This attraction has proved so popular in recent years
that the local group, who operate the boat, have invested in an
extra larger boat. A car ferry service
connects the village to Buncrana - this service runs mid June -
mid September. |

The Golden
Sands Equestrian Centre is another popular attraction and
you can frequently meet a trekking group as walk along the beach
or through the many country lanes in the hillside around the
village.
Want to bring your own horse on holidays? The centre offers you stabling and
professional care.
During the summer months the Centre runs a very popular Horse
Riding Club |
